Rack analysis
Understand TileTactician scoring, ranked placements, Coach assistance levels, and post-scan feedback.
How scoring works
TileTactician calculates each legal placement from the board, rack, and active board type:
- Base tile values — each letter contributes its standard point value.
- Letter premiums — double- and triple-letter squares multiply the tile value before it is added.
- Word premiums — double- and triple-word squares multiply the word total.
- Cross-words — perpendicular words formed by the placement are scored and added.
- Bingo bonus — using all seven rack tiles adds 50 points.
A blank is a wildcard: it can represent a letter, but contributes zero tile points. The result displays the assigned blank letter and the score breakdown for the placement.
Play ranking
The results list starts with the highest-scoring placements. When scores tie, the solver prefers a play using fewer tiles, then uses alphabetical word order for deterministic output. Tap a result to preview its placement on the board; tap it again to open the detailed result view.
You can change the results sort to Score, Length, or A–Z. The result list also exposes the placement's position, direction, cross-words, and bingo indicator when those details apply.
Rack management
The rack bar lets you:
- add tiles with the
+control; - tap a tile to remove it; and
- long-press a tile to toggle it as a blank wildcard.
Enter the rack before analyzing. The solver uses the rack together with the board and selected board type to generate legal placements.
Coach mode
The Coach slider has three assistance levels:
| Level | What the results show |
|---|---|
| Hint | Valid play locations are highlighted, but no letters are revealed |
| Coach | The top 10 placements are available, without scores |
| Expert | All solver placements are shown with full score information |
Use Hint to choose a board area yourself, Coach to compare a short list of candidate words, or Expert to inspect the complete ranked output. The level changes what the results expose; it does not change the underlying board or rack.
Blunder bar
After a second scan of the same game, the results screen can compare the newly added tiles with the solver placements. The Blunder Bar reports the matched play's efficiency against the best available score, the played word and score, the best word and score, and any missed points.
Its labels are based on efficiency:
| Efficiency | Label |
|---|---|
| 95–100% | Excellent |
| 80–94% | Good |
| 60–79% | OK |
| 40–59% | Blunder |
| Below 40% | Miss |
When the best placement uses all seven tiles and the matched play is shorter, the bar also reports that a bingo was available. If no prior board or matching placement is available, the bar is hidden.
Word definitions
Tap the ? control on a result to open the Define modal. It looks up and
shows:
- the word's definition;
- its optional part of speech; and
- its optional phonetic spelling.
The modal does not show an example sentence. It can show a loading state, a missing definition, a timeout, or an unavailable response, and it caches successful lookups while the app is running.
