Common questions and fixes for TileTactician.
General
Is TileTactician free?
TileTactician is currently in active development. Pricing and availability will be announced at launch.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The solver and dictionary are embedded in the app. Board analysis requires no network connection.
What word list does it use?
TileTactician uses the official tournament word list. The dictionary is embedded and updated with app releases.
Does it support Words With Friends?
Not currently. TileTactician supports Scrabble and NYT Crossplay board formats. Words With Friends uses a different board layout and letter distribution.
Analysis
Why are some plays missing from the results?
The solver finds every legal placement from your current rack. If a play is missing:
- Check the board. A missing or misplaced tile changes which words are formable. See Board entry.
- Check your rack. Make sure the rack matches your actual tiles exactly, including blanks.
- Check blanks. A blank entered as a fixed letter won't be treated as a wildcard.
Why is the score different from what I calculated?
Premium squares are the most common cause. Verify that:
- Tiles on premium squares are placed on the correct color
- Word premiums stack multiplicatively (double-word × double-word = 4×)
- Cross-word scores are included in the total
The analysis is slow
On modern devices (Apple M-series, A15+), a full mid-game analysis completes in under 500 ms. If analysis is noticeably slow:
- Close background apps to free memory
- Ensure the board has no empty interior gaps (holes between tiles), which increase the search space
- Restart the app if the solver appears stuck
Share Extension
TileTactician does not appear in the share sheet

The imported board has wrong tiles
Image recognition is not perfect. Always verify the board after import. Common misreads:
- O / 0 — the letter O vs. an empty cell
- I / L / 1 — similar shapes in some app renderings
- S / 5 — in low-resolution screenshots
